If Your Mentor Dies, Find a New One!

If Your Mentor Dies, Find a New One!

There comes a time in all of our lives when we need to ask ourselves one important question: Who’s sharpening me?

A support system—your lifeline—is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Expertise, feedback, awareness, and accountability should be continual. No one reaches greatness in isolation. We deserve a village of support that helps us sharpen our skills and strengthen our mindset. After all, it’s no doubt that iron sharpens iron.

I was reminded of this truth around the age of 19. A wise man told me: “Consistency is the key. Do the right thing, and do it consistently.” That advice shaped the way I’ve carried myself ever since. Because if you waiver, the outcome can be costly—whether it’s the loss of a friendship, a relationship, a career opportunity, or even access to spaces that matter most.

Mentors provide what I call the pulse check—that gauge to let you know if you’re drifting off course or standing firm. They offer guidance, wisdom, and most importantly, “The Reminder” that you are still on track and capable of more than you see in yourself.

That’s why I say boldly: If your mentor does, find a new one!

The cycle of growth must continue. Mentors are not meant to be permanent fixtures—they are meant to add value in seasons, to pour into you until it’s time for a new voice, a new perspective, or a new level.

And remember this: while you’re being sharpened, be the blade for someone else. Be the mentor someone else needs. You never know how your consistency, guidance, or even your reminder could change the entire trajectory of their life.
