Kindness in Four Quarters

A #LearnedMan Message for Our Youth

Life is a lot like a basketball game. It has four quarters, and every quarter matters. The same is true with kindness. When we break the word KINDNESS into four quarters — KI | ND | NE | SS — we realize that kindness is not just a word… it’s a way to play the game of life.

Let’s walk through the quarters.

🏀 1st Quarter —

KI

Keep Initiating Kindness

The first quarter is about starting strong. Don’t wait for someone else to be kind first. You can set the tone.

Examples for youth:

  • Saying good morning to classmates or teachers

  • Helping someone who dropped their books

  • Welcoming a new student to sit with you at lunch

  • Giving someone encouragement before a test or game

Just like in basketball, the team that sets the tone early often controls the game.

🏀 2nd Quarter —

ND

Never Doubt Kindness

Sometimes Youth wonder if kindness even matters. The answer is yes — always.

Small acts of kindness can change someone’s entire day.

Examples:

  • Sending a quick message to check on a friend

  • Standing up for someone being teased or bullied

  • Complimenting someone’s effort in class

  • Thanking a bus driver, cafeteria worker, or custodian

Never doubt it — small kindness plays add up to big wins.

🏀 3rd Quarter —

NE

Nurture & Encourage

The third quarter is where games are often won or lost. This is where leadership shows up.

Youth who nurture and encourage others make their schools stronger.

Examples:

  • Encouraging a teammate who made a mistake

  • Helping a classmate understand homework

  • Supporting a friend who feels left out

  • Cheering someone on during a performance or competition

When you nurture people and encourage them, you help build confidence and community.

🏀 4th Quarter —

SS

Stay Strong & Spread Kindness

The fourth quarter is about finishing the game with character.

Even if others are negative, you can still choose to spread kindness.

Examples:

  • Forgiving someone instead of holding a grudge

  • Ending the day by thanking a teacher

  • Being respectful even when disagreements happen

  • Leaving people better than when you found them

Champions finish strong — and kind people do too.

🏁 Final Score

When you play the game this way, the scoreboard always reads the same:

Kindness Wins.

Kindness builds friendships.

Kindness builds leadership.

Kindness builds stronger schools and stronger communities.

And remember…

You don’t need a uniform or a jersey to play this game.

Every single day you walk into school, you have the opportunity to play four quarters of kindness.

So start the game strong.

Smiles R Contagious.
