“The Garbage Doesn’t Smell” — A Lesson from Little Mason

There are moments in life where wisdom doesn’t come from a podium…

It comes from a child standing confidently in their truth.

“The Garbage Doesn’t Smell” — A Lesson from Little Mason

Today, during Take Your Child to Work Day at the Physical Plant Operations Division, we experienced one of those moments.

A young man named Mason—elementary age, full of curiosity and confidence—was asked a simple question:

“I said: What do you want to be?”

Without hesitation, he replied:

“I want to be a Garbage man.”

Now naturally, the room smiled.

Some chuckled.

Some nodded with encouragement.

But what happened next…

That’s where the lesson lived.

As the conversation continued, we began to elevate the moment—talking about commitment, dedication, and the pride that comes with blue-collar work. Real work. Honest work. Work that builds, fixes, and sustains the world around us.

I even took it a step further and said:

“Even with the smell of the garbage… dedication is most important.”

Mason paused.

Looked at all of us.

And then… corrected us.

“Garbage does not smell.”

Now we were the students.

Confused at first… curious next.

Mason explained:

“A garbage can be toys… things you can fix… things you can make better.”

Let that sit for a moment.

While we were focused on what a garbage smells like…

Mason was focused on what Garbage represents.

* Possibility

* Creativity

* Improvement

* Ownership

* Joy

Where we saw limitation…

He saw opportunity.

Where we assumed discomfort…

He saw imagination.

And in that moment, a room filled with elementary to middle school students—and yes, adults too—received a masterclass.

💡 The Real Lesson

Sometimes, our perspective needs a reset.

We attach labels.

We assign narratives.

We unintentionally minimize dreams based on our own experiences.

But Mason reminded us:

Purpose doesn’t come with a negative label—people place those labels.

🛠️ Blue Collar, Bold Vision

There’s honor in every path.

Whether it’s a boardroom…

A classroom…

Or a garage (or Garbage truck)…

What matters most is:

* Dedication to the craft

* Pride in the process

* Vision for what it can become

Because today’s “garbage man”…

Could be tomorrow’s garbage owner,

Innovator,

Employer,

Leader.

❤️ My Opening… and My Closing

As we wrapped up the day, my message stayed simple:

No matter what career you choose…

No matter what dream you chase…

Take kindness with you into the workplace.

Not sometimes.

Not when it’s easy.

Every day. Everywhere.

✨ Final Thought

Mason didn’t just talk about a garbage…

He redefined it.

And maybe… just maybe…

We should all take a moment to revisit the “Garbage” in our lives—

The places we once misunderstood…

And see them for what they truly are:

Spaces to fix, grow, build, and become better.

Be Kind. Always.
