Are You Living—or Simply Existing?

A #LearnedMan Reflection
Today I rewatched No Time to Die. I had heard this quote before, and it has always resonated with me. Today, it made me pause long enough to write:
“The proper function of man is to live, not to exist.” — Jack London
There are words you hear, and then there are words you carry. These are words I carry.
They invite a question that deserves an honest answer: Am I fully participating in the life I’ve been given?
It’s easy to fill a calendar. Responsibilities,
appointments, work, bills, and commitments can keep us moving from morning until night. We can accomplish everything on the list and still feel like something is missing.
I know how much identity can become attached to what we do. After decades of service and leadership, I’ve learned to ask myself who I am beyond a position, a title, or the next assignment. What brings me joy? What am I curious about? What do I still want to experience?
Those questions matter in every season.
Living, to me, means making intentional room for the things that give our days meaning. Sometimes that looks like pursuing a dream. Sometimes it means resting without guilt. Sometimes it’s calling someone you love while you still have the opportunity.
And sometimes it’s standing at the beach, watching the sunrise, and allowing yourself to be completely present.
The sun doesn’t need an audience to rise. Yet when I take the time to witness it, I receive something that rushing through the morning would have cost me.
That’s what I want more of: moments I actually experience.
Through the KYND Podcast, I get to notice and share everyday kindness. Through Sun After the Rain, I get to turn parts of my journey into encouragement for someone else. Through a conversation, a smile, or an unexpected connection, I get to discover how much meaning an ordinary day can hold. http://www.YouTube.com/@kyndpodcast
I’m still learning. Still growing. Still making choices about how I want to spend my time and energy.
I don’t believe a purposeful life requires constant excitement. Peace has purpose. Healing has purpose. A quiet afternoon can be deeply fulfilling. There are seasons when getting through the day takes everything you have, and that effort deserves compassion.
But when you have the capacity, give yourself permission to reach toward something that matters to you.
Write the first page. Take the walk. Ask the question. Make the call. Let someone know you love them. Enjoy the moment without immediately thinking about what comes next.
You don’t have to change your entire life today. You can begin by giving one part of it your full attention.
What is one thing you’ve been postponing that would bring more meaning, connection, or joy into your life?
My reminder to myself..and to you…is simple:
We die once, but we live every day.
May we appreciate that opportunity. May we be KYND to ourselves as we grow. And may we leave a little joy wherever we go.
